Lymes’ Senior Center Board of Directors Meeting

November 20, 2017


PRESENT:  Sue Campbell,  Diana Seckla, Jeri Baker, Gary Weed,  Joni Bonvicin, Kathy Lockwood, Stephanie Lyon-Gould, Dot McAndrew, Doris Hungerford

ABSENT:  Ann Griffith, Doris Johnson, Johnny Cody

CALL TO ORDER:  Sue Campbell at 1:00

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Accepted with type corrections.  A motion was called for by Jeri Baker and Diana Seckla seconded.  Unanimous approval.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Stephanie Lyon-Gould, Doris Hungerford - The August-October and October-November reports were accepted as submitted.  A motion was called to accept by Jeri Baker and seconded by Joni Bonvicin.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

SPECIAL EVENTS:   Stephanie Lyon-Gould - The Saybrook at Haddam gave a donation for a joint presentation of “Check List of Life”.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES:  Stephanie Lyon-Gould
  Thanksgiving Luncheon:  Thank you to everyone for your help.  The luncheon was very successful with 116 people in attendance.  The town crew helped with the tables and chairs.
     Stephanie Lyon-Gould:  Will be out of the office from January 4th for two weeks for surgery.  She will need someone to help out with three events on January 9th, 10th and 12th during this time.  On January 16th there is a memory screening and Big Y is offering vaccines.  Joni can set up these events in her office.
  Tree Trimming:  The date is November 29th.
  Upcoming December Programs:  Dec. 3rd the Old Lyme Town Band plays a concert from 2-5.  Dec. 6th is the Anne Frank Tea.  December 12th Pudd’nheads: Childhood in Colonial America will be presented.  Dec. 13th a stroke awareness presentation is being offered by Brad Fowler.  Dec 14th at 12:30 is the Yankee Swap.  To participate bring a
wrapped gift worth $5.00.  Dec. 5th and 19th, The Visiting Nurses of Lower Valley are presenting Conversation Project:  End of Life Care.  Dec. 21st, The LOL High School Select Singers will perform.  Dec. 22nd is the Christmas Luncheon with entertainment.

POLICY:  

   By Laws:  Stephanie Lyon-Gould   A committee to amend the by laws and review policy changes will consist of Stephanie Lyon-Gould, Jeri Baker, Diana Seckla and Kathy Lockwood.

OLD BUSINESS:

VOTE ON NEW MEMBER:  Jeri Baker motioned to accept Don Abraham as a new board member - Kathy Lockwood seconded.  Unanimous Approval.  His name will be forwarded to the town selectmen for final approval.  

EXPANSION:  Discussion of possible expansion opportunities will be added to the January 2018 agenda.

FLOORS:  Stephanie-Lyon Gould -  The floors are thoroughly cleaned and waxed four times per year.  The next application will be in January and we will explore different wax
“stickyness”.

TV:  Gary Weed proposed a motion for a free raffle of the TV in “as is” condition.  Jeri Baker seconded.  Unanimous approval.

CHAIRS:  Gary Weed - Thank you to the town of Old Lyme for moving chairs for events.

OTHER OLD BUSINESS:  Sue Campbell -  Needs someone to replace her as Chair of the Board.
No one is charge when Stephanie is out of office which could present several issues, including a concern for liability.  Stephanie also needs help on a regular basis on the  newsletter, press releases, sign ups. etc.  The board will recommend that a position is created through the budget process and a presentation to the towns and the Finance board will be made in 2018.  

NEW BUSINESS:

REPORT ON HALL ROAD MEETING:  Jeri Baker -  The focus groups are concerned about safety, including cohesive crosswalks, new sidewalks, better lighting and signage.  They are welcoming feedback from the community.

CHRISTMAS BANQUET:  Sue Campbell -  The Senior Club would like a banquet.

OTHER NEW BUSINESS:  Sue Campbell -  Are there some functions which should not be advertised on the website?  Stephanie Lyon-Gould suggested that newspaper advertising be rephrased to “members only of the Lyme, Old Lyme senior community”.
Ann Griffith -  Sent a request for 10 sets of new salt and pepper shakers and a new bingo spinner.  Diana Seckla motioned to purchase,  Gary Weed seconded.  Unanimous approval.  
Dot McAndrew, Secretary of the Board, will send an invitation to the two new Selectpersons of Lyme and Old Lyme to attend the January 22nd Senior Board meeting.

ADJOURN:  Meeting adjourned at 2:30.  Gary Weed motioned, Jeri Baker seconded.  Unanimous approval.
